Public will be consulted on future of St Pierre du Bois

Tuesday 26 April 2022

Leaflets are being delivered this week to every home in St Pierre du Bois asking parishioners how they want their community to look in 15-20 years’ time.

It’s part of a consultative exercise to gauge opinion about four key areas – housing, retail, traffic, and leisure. All 2000 residents are invited to an interactive exhibition setting out possible options for change, from the modest to the radical.

The exhibition, held at the Douzaine Rooms, opens on May 6 and will remain available to visitors until May 21.

Behind the initiative is an Independent Steering Committee of local people who have been asked by the Douzaine to come up with a blueprint for the future which will guide the planning process.

Visitors will have the opportunity to state their opinions and put forward their own ideas.

Chairman of the Committee, Tony Talmage, said: "Change is everywhere in modern life.  But we believe those who live, work in, or who have other connections with the parish, would prefer to be guiding that change, rather than be driven by it."

Mr Talmage said that one of the aims of the Committee was to guard against any threat to St Peters’ unique identity while simultaneously ensuring it prospers as it moves with the times.

“We are looking at questions like: Do we need more affordable housing? Or care facilities for the elderly?  And what about Parking? Are there enough leisure amenities, especially for young people? Do we need a hairdresser? A café? More shops generally?”

Mr Talmage said that after the exhibition closes his Committee will use the opinions expressed to draw up a draft Community Plan for the parish which will submitted to the Douzaine and, from there, it will be placed before a public Parish Meeting where it will be voted on.

Opening times for the exhibition are 10:00 - 12:00 and 16:00 - 18:00, Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 10:00 - 13:00.

For those unable to attend in person, a version of the exhibition will be available on the Douzaine’s website and Facebook page, also inviting comments and opinions. Emails are also welcomed.
