Flying Christine's gearbox to take another six weeks to repair

Thursday 13 April 2023

A gearbox failure will keep the marine ambulance out of action for at least another six weeks.

The Flying Christine III has been in dry dock for routine maintenance since 23 January.

A survey discovered the problem. Parts are now being manufactured for the gearbox.

“We are continuing to work closely with our partners to ensure that other vessels in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, can provide cover while the marine ambulance undergoes repairs and we will continue to provide essential emergency services to the Bailiwick islands with the support of those partners,” a St John Ambulance and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

Since the start of the year the lifeboat has covered eight marine ambulance missions.

The Flying Christine was purpose-built using donations and funding from the public.

She was launched in 1994, with a design life of 30 years.

It has now been in operation for 29 years with a review of whether the service should continue beyond 2024 underway.
