11 students have completed the first year of a two-year Level 3 Diploma in Principles & Practice of Dental Nursing.
This is the first time the College of Further Education has run this course, which was introduced in response to feedback from the sector.
“We have had extremely positive feedback from this first group of students who have welcomed the opportunity of gaining a formal qualification on the island within their chosen sector," said College Faculty Director Lorraine Barker.
"We aim to offer the course again in the future once this first cohort has completed the qualification.”
The course covers a wide range of topics including the underpinning ethics, professionalism, teamwork and communication required to work as a dental nurse.
The two-year programme is delivered by Catherine Rowberry, who qualified as a registered dental nurse in 1987 after two years studying at Manchester University.
CoFE Principal Louise Misselke said the college works hard to provide courses that most benefit local industries.
“The college offers a responsive provision of professional qualifications, working in partnership with the island’s various industry sectors to ensure that our training provision correlates with their needs. I am delighted that this course is proving such a success.”
