Hotel Group supports La Grande Mare plans

Friday 21 July 2023

The Little Big Hotel Group - which owns the Fleur du Jardin - has offered its support to the owners of the nearby La Grande Mare as they invest millions of pounds in redeveloping the hotel and golf course.

Little Big Hotel Group Development Director, Simon de la Rue said other businesses should support such large scale investment because of the wider value it will add to the island as a whole.

Mr de la Rue thinks the Fleur will benefit from future guests at La Grande Mare taking short walks to other destinations for dinner or drinks, while they'll also spend money at other restaurants and bars in the island.

"I know a lot has been said about the pylons at the La Grande Mare site, but speaking from the Fleur's perspective, we're absolutely delighted with the investment that Mr Lansdown is making in the island."

Mr De La Rue continued: "That's exactly the sort of product offering that we need. And those visitors, those golfers, they're not just gonna eat there. They're going to eat everywhere. They're going to spend their money everywhere. So every single business on this island should be supporting Steve and what he's doing in that installation.

"We're so fortunate to have someone like that here investing that money in the island and the rest of us need to get behind him and reap the rewards when they arrive."

Not everyone agrees with Mr de la Rue's point of view.

A petition was launched last month after a series of pylons, up to 30-metres high, appeared almost overnight within the area designated as a new driving range.

The pylons will hold up netting to protect neighbouring homes from golf balls.

The structures initially received criticism not only from people who live nearby but politicians too.

Further criticism followed a meeting between residents and the golf course and hotel owners, with one person signing the petition describing the development as a "monstrosity”. Another said “they are completely spoiling the area”.

The Development and Planning Authority approved the golf course plans with the political members delegating the decision making to the civil service officers.

The President of the DPA, Deputy Victoria Oliver is reported to have said that the pylons are “awful but that planning permission would not be revoked regardless of any opposition to the pylons and wider work.
