Experience the life and work of Peter Le Vasseur

Sunday 21 August 2022

A new book detailing the life and work of artist Peter Le Vasseur has been published, and an exhibition will open to the public at the end of the month.

The former Guernsey Museums Director and author, Dr Jason Monaghan, has written the book entitled ‘A Brush with Life’. He has worked closely with Mr Le Vasseur since the end of 2019.

Mr Le Vasseur was evacuated from Guernsey with his parents just before the 1940 German Occupation. In London, he developed his artistic skills and was awarded a scholarship to art college.

Since returning to Guernsey four decades ago, his detailed artworks have consistently filled local galleries. The heavily illustrated book features more than fifty of his best artworks, with strong ecological themes throughout.

Mr Le Vasseur’s new exhibition, also called ‘A Brush With Life’, is opening to the public at the Coach House Gallery in St. Peters from August 29 to September 30 – excluding Sundays.

Dr Monaghan said it was an “immense privilege” to work alongside Mr Le Vasseur and understand his journey as an artist since the 60s.

“As I take a keen interest in climate science, it has also been an interesting journey researching the ecological background to each picture,” he said.

He added that with each new headline about the state of the planet, the paintings took on new relevance – but said they often carry humorous and ironic takes on humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Dr Monaghan will also deliver a lecture about the book at Candie Museum on August 30 at 19:30. Admission is free, but tickets must be obtained in advance from Guernsey Arts.

A limited number of copies of the book signed by both Jason and Peter will be available on the night, and also from the Coach House Gallery during the exhibition.

The book is published by The Lutterworth Press and has been sponsored by the Aspida Group and Guernsey Arts.
