EXCLUSIVE: Super-Gav’s origins revealed

Wednesday 01 April 2020

Awestruck islanders have been going “stir crazy” for our Chief Minister in recent weeks - and that’s only set to intensify now that he’s been proven to possess apparent 'superhuman qualities'.

People across the Bailiwick have joined together in their adulation of Gavin St Pier, recognising his redoubtable work ethic, calm decision-making and his presence as a natural leader during a time of crisis.

With emotions heightened amid the current uncertainty, what started as political plaudits have since turned into praise of a more personal nature.

Twitter has been the hot-bed of the newly-formed, self-styled ‘GSP fan club’, many of whom have been rumoured to be 'sliding' into Super-Gav’s 'DM’s' in recent days.

For some though, private espousals have not been enough, and they have been making their professions of love publicly.

Another lovestruck islander said Guernsey's leader had become the hottest topic of conversation in recent weeks.

Jonathan Marquis suggested the current lockdown was the only thing keeping Super-Gav safe from his more determined fans.

Super-Gav has tried valiantly to downplay the compliments, highlighting what he says are his own visual similarities to, among others, infamous Eastenders love rat Max Branning and Conservative bore-fest William Hague.

To his admirers, it was just further proof of his humility and good humour.

And despite Super-Gav’s persistent fault-finding and an obviously unwarranted comparison to cartoon ogre Shrek, it was his fans who were left green with envy when local photographer Chris George pulled an image of a younger St Pier from his archives.

It was the final straw.

The Emma's out there were speechless. It was just too much.

Even prolific pundit Horace Camp was lost for words.

Beneath all the hysteria lies an important message. Unlike some jurisdictions, we have leaders we can put our trust in.

Gavin and the rest of our leaders are doing a sterling job in challenging and unprecedented circumstances. In his own words: "We've got this."
