Election confirmed in Alderney

Monday 06 February 2023

A contested election will be held in Alderney next week after two candidates were nominated to contest the one vacant seat in the States.

A by-election is scheduled for 18 February.

Frederick George Fisher III and Derwent Smithurst have been nominated and one will be elected by the public on Saturday 18 February.

All people over the age of 16, registered on the electoral roll, will be able to have their say.

This will be the first election held since Alderney lowered the voting age to 16 in one of King Charles' first actions at a Privy Council meeting after acceding to the throne on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II last September.

Serving States of Alderney Member, Alex Snowdon said the confirmed election is "positive news" for democracy in the island.

The by-election was scheduled after the previous election only saw four candidates nominated for five seats meaning they were elected uncontested.

The plebiscite in December to elect two representatives for Alderney in the States of Guernsey was contested with three men vying for the two seats.
