Drivers encouraged to plan as traffic comes to standstill

Wednesday 03 January 2024

Long tail backs are likely along Guernsey’s main commuter road for the rest of the working week.

Temporary traffic lights went up after the morning rush on 2 January along St George’s Esplanade to allow Sure to install a new duct and they are scheduled to remain in place until 5 January.

Meanwhile, emergency evacuations to identify a gas leak on Grand Maisons Road – connecting the Bridge to the seafront – have forced it's closure since last week resulting in the diversion of several bus routes around Bulwer Avenue.

A bus this morning travelling from the Bridge to the Town Terminus took 45 minutes to complete that stretch. A driver also reported an hour journey from Bordeaux to St Peter Port.

Traffic and Highway Services is advising those using the roads to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys at peak times, or to use alternative transport.

Grande Maisons is scheduled to reopen from tomorrow.

Later in the week, lanes will be reduced on the Weighbridge roundabout to allow the Tree of Joy to be disassembled.

Into next week, Le Grand Bouet will close for three days for Guernsey Electricity to complete utility works and the replacement of streetlights.

And from Monday 8 January Grange Road will go one-way westbound for just under two months, also to allow for electricity upgrades.
