Drag Queen Story Hour returns to Guille-Alles library

Thursday 25 August 2022

Drag Queen Story Hour has returned to Guernsey, and despite some social media backlash, Aida H Dee has been welcomed back to the Guille-Alles library with open arms.

This is the fifth time the event has been held at the public library, and it’s a well-established event in the UK, with Guernsey this year being the last stop on a UK tour that visited London, Cardiff and Leeds.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming Aida H Dee back here again,” said Adam Bayfield from the library.

“Drag Queen Story Hour sessions are great fun, helping to introduce young readers to ideas of diversity and inclusion while they enjoy some lovely stories.

“All four previous events here have proved extremely popular, and tickets are booking up quickly once again.”

The announcement of the sessions generated heated discussion on social media, after some people claimed the event is inappropriate for children.

In the run up to national events, some people attempted to block book shows so that others couldn’t attend.

“We’re aware that, as with the sessions at those other libraries, this event has sparked some social media discussion amongst some people both locally and further afield,” continued Mr Bayfield.

“At the Library we are steadfast in our commitment to values of equality, inclusion, kindness, and freedom from censorship. Libraries are for everyone, no matter their age, race, sex, nationality, sexual orientation, or religion.

“The families choosing to attend next week’s event here will, as always, be provided with a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment to enjoy some stories and celebrate the power of reading.”
