Dougie's Grant open for applications again

Sunday 06 October 2024

A charitable fund - established by a 99-year-old man before his death - is inviting applications from local good causes.

Dougie’s Grant is a £10,000 gift to be awarded to a Guernsey-based charitable project in memory of the local entrepreneur who died in 2021.

Dougie Le Huquet was a grower, who also owned a chain of chip shops and developed commercial and residential property in Guernsey, Jersey and the United States.

It was his wish that 'Dougie’s Grant' should be established to benefit local causes and his wish has been granted twice already since his death.

In its inaugural year the grant was awarded to Mill Street Community Café and in 2023 it went to the Guille-Allès Library, where it has been used to fund six new, top-of-the-range desktop PCs providing IT and Internet access to hundreds of islanders who may otherwise be digitally excluded.

Applications are invited from now until 31 October for the 2024 grant.

The applications must come from registered charities who can clearly demonstrate a specific named Guernsey-based project that the funding will benefit. The successful applicant will be announced on 19 December which was Dougie’s birthday.

“We are thrilled that Dad’s legacy has already benefited two great Guernsey causes and we are looking forward to hearing from charities initiating specific projects that would be aided by the 2024 award,” said his daughter, Michelle Knowles.

Further information about the grant and how charities should apply is available on the website.
