"Don't delay on debt"

Monday 22 June 2020

Many people will have been unprepared for the financial impact of lockdown, but Citizens Advice is urging them to seek support as quickly as possible in order to "get their lives back on track"

The Citizens Advice Guernsey became the first branch nationwide to re-open for face-to-face meetings, offering advice on a range of money matters, including budgeting and managing debt.

Since closing its doors to visitors at the start of the corona virus pandemic, CAB Chief Executive Officer Kerry Ciotti said the team had been continuing to provide advise by telephone, but are pleased to be able to resume normal operations.

"Money creates problems for a lot of people at the best of times, but the effects of the corona virus for many islanders will be very worrying," she said. "Whether you’re a tenant, a landlord or have a mortgage, are self-employed, a small business owner or an employee, it’s likely that the pandemic will have had an impact on your finances. The message is don’t delay on debt. Citizens Advice is ready to help you.

"The far-reaching economic effects of the pandemic will have hit some islanders who had been managing their finances quite successfully and may not have thought of seeking help before. For them this will be a shock and something for which they are completely unprepared. Our trained Money Advisers can help them to make sense of their situation in order to get their lives back on track.

Advice is available not only for people who are already in debt, she said.

"We offer everything from simple budgeting advice to a full financial restitution negotiation service," said Mrs Ciotti. "You really don’t have to wait until things spiral out of control before seeking help. We can help you try to take back control of your financial situation and to find your way out."
