Dog attack update

Friday 29 November 2019

Guernsey Police have confirmed the events of yesterday's 'dog attack' after initially warning the public it had happened in Saumarez Park.

The incident actually took place in a lane near the park, but the animal is not believed to have been within the grounds of the park at any time.

The force first received calls alerting them to a dangerous dog shortly after 11:00. While it was initially believed five people and two animals were injured, Guernsey Police later clarified that three people and one dog had been injured. The States Vet gave the order to 'neutralise' the dog who had attacked the others.

An eyewitness told Express that he ran out of his house on Ruette de la Tour after hearing high pitched, distressed sounding screams. Fireman Shane Gaudion then helped to release the dog's grip on another dog and a woman's hand, before restraining the dog until armed police could get to the scene.

In an update released on Friday afternoon, just over 24 hours after the incident, Guernsey Police confirmed where the attack had happened and said that no-one had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Initial enquiries indicate that the dog escaped from the owner’s property and proceeded to vicinity of Saumarez Park," the update said.

Initially we were led to believe it was in the rear car park to Saumarez Park. The attack took place in Ruette de la Tour, Castel.

After attacking a dog and three people, the dog was restrained by members of the public in Ruette de la Tour. Upon the advice of the States vet, firearms officers dispatched the dog to neutralise the threat it posed to the public and first responders. We remain in contact with the owners and there have been no arrests.”
