Do you want to save money?

Wednesday 18 September 2024

A number of businesses and charities are joining Guernsey Electricity in a combined effort to help people save money on their energy bills this winter.

With average temperatures of 18c in September dropping to 10c by December, more people will be using their central heating, and cooking hot meals to warm them up as the weeks go by.

People are also more likely to be spending time indoors with bulkier clothes needing washing and drying with every washing machine cycle or hour spent watching TV all adding to a household's electricity usage.

With this in mind, Guernsey Electricity is hosting a free 'Powering Life for Less' community event this weekend.

Held at St Pierre Park Hotel on Saturday 21 September between 10:00 and 14:00 the event will be a 'one-stop shop' for people wanting to save money on their energy bills this winter.

As well as a team of experts from Guernsey Electricity, who will be able to discuss tariffs and ways of using the 'cheap rate' electricity service, there'll also be a variety of charities and local businesses offering money-saving tips and practical advice.

Steven Parks, Head of Customer Experience at Guernsey Electricity, said it's all been designed to help customers save money.

“We understand the cost of living is impacting islanders which is why we have set up this event and teamed up with community partners," he explained.

“Many people are unaware of how much energy their electrical appliances consume, so making small changes to how and when they use these devices can lead to significant savings. By adopting a few simple adjustments, the average customer could save up to £89 a year on their energy bill.

“We will be sharing advice and tips with customers at this event, together with hosting fun activities and a range of games for all the family.”

As well as experts from Guernsey Electricity, the Powering Life for Less show will have staff and volunteers from numerous other local organisations who can also help everyone save money.

This includes the team behind 'Supersavvysavers'.

Supersavvysavers was only launched earlier this year but has already gained a loyal following by sharing money and time saving tips on its Facebook page.

It does a monthly supermarket price comparison and shares tips for offers, deals, and discounts at local retailers, shops, and supermarkets.

Charities which work directly with people struggling as a result of the cost of living crisis will be there too, with the Repair Cafe working to help people learn new skills, and Guernsey Welfare Service offering help with budgeting and cooking alongside its food banks and other services.

As well as Guernsey Electricity, the Little Green Energy Company will also be at the Powering Life for Less show.

Its staff are also able to advise on lowering your energy bills with a focus on solar panels and other green initiatives.

Mr Parks said Guernsey Electricity want to ensure the Powering Life for Less show is fun for everyone as well as informative.

Other features planned include an interactive zone with challenges to engage the younger generation, which will illustrate how saving energy can benefit their future as well as their parents’ pockets, and a demonstration of how to cook cost-effective recipes made in energy-efficient appliances, with free samples to try for attendees.

Visitors will also be entered into a raffle with a chance to win prizes worth £2,000.
