Do you want more small car spaces in Town?

Wednesday 04 September 2019

13 new 10-hour parking spaces are just one of the ideas on the cards as part of a major road improvement project planned for the Havelet end of the South Esplanade later this year.

Traffic & Highway Services are now asking people to let them know what their thoughts are on the idea, as the new 10-hour spaces would need to replace existing standard parking spaces in the area next to Havelet Bay.

Plans also include a new 'build-out' and informal pedestrian crossing point opposite Havelet to improve pedestrian safety in the area. Then there would be an extension of the footpath towards La Vallette and improvements for people with disabilities. Dropped kerbs will be provided, along with tactile paving and other minor pedestrian safety improvements along South Esplanade.

Small parking spaces are for vehicles not exceeding an approximate size of 3.6m long by 1.7m wide.

A spokesperson for T&HS said the new crossing would offer 'an ideal opportunity to increase the number of small car parking spaces at this end of Town', in response to the 'continued popularity of the existing small car parking scheme'.

"The informal pedestrian crossing point would be located to the south of the junction with Les Echelons and would include a build-out on the seaward side to reduce the width of the carriageway," the spokesperson said.

"This, along with the provision of 10 small parking spaces to the north, would ensure that pedestrians have an appropriate view of approaching traffic and vice-versa. Three parallel small parking spaces would be provided to the south of the build-out to maximise the space and offset any loss of parking provision resulting from this initiative."

Anyone interested in commenting on the proposed replacement of existing standard size car parking spaces to provide for 13 small car parking spaces as part of a wider initiative to improve pedestrian safety in the area should e-mail traffic@gov.gg or write to The Licensing and Operations Manager, Traffic and Highway Services, Bulwer Avenue Office, St Sampson, GY2 4LR by Sunday 15 September 2019.
