P&R’s new President has revealed his new responsibilities after the Committee formally met for the first time in its new guise.

Deputy Lyndon Trott held a meeting today (19 December) with his new Committee members; Deputies Heidi Soulsby (Vice-President), Bob Murray, John Gollop, while Jonathan Le Tocq was on pre-arranged leave.

They were also joined by the Head of the Public Service, Mark de Garis.

The discussion revolved around which member would lead in each area, and while these roles haven’t been defined for Deputies Murray, Gollop, and Le Tocq – despite an understanding that Deputies Murray and Le Tocq will continue their work on the GWP and external affairs respectively – it was revealed that Deputies Trott and Soulsby will jointly lead on Treasury matters.

Deputy Trott will also lead the Tax Sub-Committee, and will lead on regulatory matters for financial services and MoneyVAL.

Deputy Soulsby will in turn lead the Reducing the Cost of Public Services Sub-Committee.

“Today was a busy, but also a very positive start to our work,” said Deputy Trott.

“There is a lot to get done in the remainder of this political term, and the briefings we have had today have helped to bring us up to speed quickly so we can hit the ground running. There’s much more to discuss as the Committee has a broad mandate and so we will meet again throughout this week, but I’m very encouraged by today.

“We will also continue our discussions over which members will lead in different areas, butI’mvery pleased to be taking a lead role with Deputy Soulsby on Treasury matters. My business background in financial services and Deputy Soulsby’s experience as a chartered accountant mean we are both a natural fit to lead in this area.

“By having more than one of our Committee taking lead roles in this way, we also make better use of our combined skills and knowledge. This Committee is very committed to working together to make some real progress in the coming months.”

The Committee will be meeting again on Thursday.
