Deputy Mahoney “disappointed” with nurse union claims

Guernsey’s political lead for employer matters has refuted claims from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) that the States are ignoring the issue of pay parity.

Express reported yesterday on the RCN’s recommendation to its Guernsey members that they reject the three-year pay deal offered to them by the States of Guernsey.

The nursing union is now balloting members with two questions, whether members accept or reject the pay offer, and, if rejected, whether they would be prepared to undertake industrial action.

Deputy Dave Mahoney is the political lead for employer matters for the Policy & Resources Committee, and has said: “We are pleased to see that the RCN is now balloting its members albeit ten weeks after the Employer made its offer.

“It is, however, disappointing that the States are described as ‘ignoring’ the issue of pay parity, when nurses and midwives have received a pay uplift of c.20% for the period 2018-2021, whilst other groups such as Established Staff were awarded 6.4% for the same period.”

Deputy Mahoney said the Employer (SOG) has made it very clear that following the conclusion of pay negotiations, it is willing to engage with all Unions across the public sector “to see how we can work together to address some of the issues that are important to them and the States, whilst acknowledging that the two sides will not always share the same views on proposed solutions”.

Union members have until 13 September to have their say.
