Credit buffer offered for New Year weekend

Friday 30 December 2022

Pre-pay electricity meters will not run out of credit this weekend, as Guernsey Electricity looks to ease pressure on customers over the festive period.

After extending its protected times over Christmas to account for the additional bank holiday, it is doing the same from today until 3 January.

Guernsey Electricity says this should reassure customers on pre-pay meters that they will remain connected during the festive period even if they run out of credit.

The company says its protected times, known as ‘friendly times’ for pay-as-you-go meters were extended to cover Christmas and also Near Year, meaning customers won't see their electricity supply automatically turned off if they do not top up.

Steven Parks, head of customer experience at Guernsey Electricity, said: “As we all know, Christmas is a busy time and people may forget to put credit into their meters before the shops close on New Year’s Eve.

“With these friendly dates and times in place, pay-as-you-go customers will still be able to serve up a festive New Year lunch, even if they don’t remember to top up in advance.”

The extended protected period will run from 16:30 today (Friday 30 December) to 09:00 on Tuesday 3 January.
