Court date delayed for psychological checkup

Tuesday 09 January 2018

A man who failed to appear in court will be given a psychological assessment before returning, it has been decided.

Calvin Goddard, of no fixed address, was due to appear before Guernsey's Magistrates Court where he has yet to enter a plea, after being charged with threatening to kill another man in an alleged incident before Christmas. He was also set to be charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer.

Judge Graham McKerrell said Mr Goddard was not fit to appear before the court yesterday morning, because he was "not in a good place" and was "on the edge".

Judge McKerrell said Mr Goddard's state of mind at the time of the scheduled court hearing called the safety of those in the courtroom and Mr Goddard's own safety into question.

Mr Goddard's advocate and Judge McKerrell agreed he would be remanded into custody until 26 January in order to provide time for a psychological assessment to be carried out.

A new court date would also be set either on or before that date, following the assessment.

The case follows an alleged incident on the 21 December in St Martins at a residential address.

On the 29 December Mr Goddard appeared in court to be charged with making a threat to kill - it was then that he is accused assaulting two police officers.
