Summer getaways hit turbulence after travel re-categorisation

Wednesday 21 July 2021

Blue Islands announced last week it would be launching direct flights to Corsica, before having to cut out the Guernsey link just days later after the Mediterranean island was moved to the Bailiwick's Category 3 watchlist.

Blue Islands announced last Wednesday that it was scheduling seven-day return flights from Guernsey, to Jersey, to Corsica’s Bastia Airport for 13-20 and 20-27 August.

However, within days, those who booked were told that the Guernsey leg had been dropped, with the airline now saying that it is "unable" to run it given Corsica's re-categorisation in Guernsey's traffic light-style system for places outside the Common Travel Area.

Direct flights to Corsica from Jersey are unaffected, due to the larger Channel Island's different border policies. However, anyone from Guernsey would have to arrange separate travel to Jersey and then isolate as required by the States' guidelines upon their return.

"We know that flying direct to select European destinations is favoured by many Channel Islanders with most flights to Ibiza [from Jersey] now sold-out and we will continue to explore opportunities to bring new and exciting connectivity to the islands," said a spokesperson for Blue Islands.

"The environment in which we are operating is evolving daily and requires continual reaction; we would like to thank customers who supported our Corsica activity from Guernsey, we have offered those affected an option to fly via Jersey to Corsica or Ibiza."
