Coronavirus hits Jersey too

Tuesday 10 March 2020

Jersey has had its first case of coronavirus confirmed, a day after it was announced a Guernsey patient has tested positive for COVID-19.

So far they are the only two people in the Channel Islands confirmed to have the virus, but many hundreds more have been tested and some are still waiting for their test results to come back.

The Guernsey patient had recently returned from a trip to Tenerife, while the Jersey resident confirmed to have coronavirus has been in Italy. They are not connected to a school trip which recently returned from Italy.

The whole of Italy is currently in lockdown as the country battles to contain the spread of COVID-19 which has left hundreds of people dead already.

A hotel in Tenerife is listed in Group A on the travel advice issued by the States of Guernsey meaning you have to self isolate if you have been there, even if you don't show any symptoms. The rest of Tenerife is in Group B, meaning you only have to self isolate if you have symptoms including a dry cough, fever and shortness of breath.

The whole of Italy is now a Group A country meaning anyone returning from there needs to self isolate.
