Corona latest: more measures expected today

Monday 23 March 2020

With the Bailiwick now having 20 confirmed cases of covid-19 more stringent measures are expected to be introduced to ensure more people stick to social distancing and self isolation if needed.

Around a thousand people are already self isolating - either because they have to by law because they've recently returned from outside the Bailiwick, because they are considered at a high risk of contracting corona virus or because they have chosen to for other reasons.

Thousands more are practicing social-distancing, but there have been concerns expressed in some areas that not everyone is doing so despite the growing threat of corona virus on the islands.

Of the 20 confirmed cases in the islands, all are resident in Guernsey, and all have a clear travel history from the UK, France, Tenerife, Mainland Spain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

There are links between some of those cases, with four clusters among ten of the patients:

  • Cluster 1 - (French ski trip)
  • Cluster 2 - (2nd French ski trip)
  • Cluster 3 - (Germany / Austria ski trip)
  • Cluster 4 - (3rd French ski trip)

Contact tracing is continuing to identify anyone at risk from the 20 patients. A spokesperson for HSC said: "This is progressing well".

As the number of cases continues to grow, HSC is continuing to amend its response.

Among the measures announced today is the recruitment of more nurses and clinicians.
