Urgent pleas for young men to register as donors

Tuesday 03 July 2018

The family and friends of a Guernseyman who needs a bone marrow donor are continuing their pleas for other men, aged between 16 and 30, to register with the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Mark was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2016 and despite chemotherapy initially being successful, a recent Bone Marrow Biopsy saw him diagnosed with Myeloid Dysplastic Syndrome which requires a bone marrow transplant.

The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust and its Guernsey branch have been appearing for potential donors to come forward on Mark's behalf since last week.

They are looking for men aged 16-30 in particular but anyone can register as they could be a donor match for another patient. The charity will have a team of people in Guernsey within the coming few weeks where they will be testing "as many potential donors as possible" at a location to be confirmed.

The test will include giving a saliva sample, and a short form will need to be completed.

Anyone who wishes to register or find out more can email gsyfriendsant@hotmail.com

Mark had told the Guernsey Friends of Anthony Nolan Trust that he has been spending time indoors as his doctors have advised him that is the best way to protect his immune system.

He said he is also; "spending as much quality time with my family as I can and following my Doctor's orders of staying home to protect my immune system whilst I wait for a bone marrow donation."

He spent time over the weekend; "playing with my Granddaughter Willow in our garden, she loves her little summer house," and watching the Grand Prix with his family.

He also wanted to thank "everyone who has shared, liked and commented and who have joined and are going to join the bone marrow register to save a life like mine."
