Condor names new vessel

Friday 17 March 2023

Condor have dubbed its new conventional ferry the ‘Islander’.

The Condor Islander will come to Europe from New Zealand at the end of next month via the Panama Canal.

The trip should take seven weeks, with the vessel going into dry dock afterwards. It will then undergo berthing trials in Portsmouth, the Channel Islands and St. Malo.

John Napton, Condor Ferries’ CEO, said while names are not always important, the firm “really wanted something that reflects we have been part of Channel Islands’ life for just over three quarters of a century".

He said: “We also felt it should resonate with visitors to our shores so Islander seems appropriate."

There is work to do to the vessel in the meantime, though.

“We need to make a number of alterations to the ship from its current use with a domestic operator – and a maximum four-hour travel time – to one suitable for international transit journeys of more than eight hours, so there are different requirements involved,” Mr Napton said.

Changes will also include installing a duty-free shop.
