Commuter chaos forecast

Monday 07 November 2022

Some of Guernsey's roads are expected to be busier than usual this morning as multiple roads are closed for essential works, including some main routes near to one another.

Les Varendes and the Friquet and Grandes Maison Road and Braye Road are just two examples of pairs of roads near one another which are both affected by closures and diversions today.

The States' Traffic and Highways Services team used Facebook to forewarn drivers yesterday.

They warned there would be "a number of works taking place from Monday (7 November) which will affect a number of commuter routes" while advising drivers to "allow extra time for your journey".

Many of the works are already underway with others scheduled to start today.

These include Guernsey Electricity working in Les Vauquidor meaning access to the hospital will be from the Bailiff's Cross end of the road, or the Oberlands.

La Couture and Le Foulon are both closed while Braye Road will have diversions to enable work between the Industrial Estate and Sohier Road.

The work at Richmond Corner moves to the entrance to Grandes Maison Road from today with temporary traffic lights continuing to replace the toucan crossing there.

The roadworks are due to multiple utilities being installed or upgraded including the new fibre network.

As a result of some of the roads being worked on, others are one way or restricted to residents only to avoid congestion building. This includes Port Vailaint, near both the Friquet and Varendes closures.

Numerous other roads and lanes are also affected by closures or diversions this coming week. Most are in St Peter Port.

While the red lines on the above map indicate a road is closed, yellow shows a diversion is in place.

The grey line means 'other' restrictions are in place including one ways where a road is normally two way or access for residents only.

Recently, the President of the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure referenced the large number of road closures in a speech to the States.

Deputy Lindsay De Sausmarez was updating the States on the work of her committee, which oversees road works and transportation.

She confirmed there were more road closures than usual due to the fibre rollout and other roadworks - both emergency and routine.
