Guernsey Water has launched a festive campaign, giving advice on the best way to get rid of cooking oils, fats and grease after the big day.

Build ups have caused issues for the utility's wastewater network in the past, as well as contributing to pollution.

"Putting fat, oil and grease down your sink into the island's wastewater network means there is a build up of congealing fats within the pipes and pumps," explained Guernsey Water's Operations Manager, Jon Holt. "This results in restricted flows and increases the risk of flooding and associated pollution.

"The wastewater network includes all the pipes and pumps which remove used water and sewage from all properties on the island. This includes anything that goes down your drains or in the toilet. By keeping our drains clear we can ensure a better service for everyone on the island, reducing the need for repair works, the risk of blockages and floods, and ultimately providing a more efficient service with fewer disruptions."

The utility's official guidelines and top tips for households include:

Oil in small quantities - Wipe out pans with a small amount of kitchen roll and place in your black food waste caddy. A small amount of kitchen paper is accepted in your caddy.

Roasting juices - Carefully pour the liquid into a cup or pot. Once solidified and cool, remove it from the container and dispose of it in your food waste caddy.

Other solid fats (butter and goose or duck fat) - Once cooled and solidified, dispose of them in your food waste caddy.

Large quantities of vegetable oil, like those from deep fat fryers, should be cooled and taken to Longue Houguette Household Waste and Recycling Centre, where they will be sent to the UK and recycled into biofuel.

"We want to remind people during the festive season that there are much better ways to dispose of your fats, oils and grease whilst also safeguarding the network," Mr Holt added.
