Another warning has been issued about a Snapchat group that has attracted more than 50 local children to it, where it’s understood they may be encouraged to share explicit images of themselves.
The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) has repeated a stark warning given by Guernsey Police about the Snapchat group.
Law Enforcement believes that more than 50 local children have joined and that those in the group might be encouraged to share explicit images of themselves. It’s also understood that sexually explicit imagery is being shared on the group.
“This warning is of particular significance as we mark data protection week with our focus on protecting children’s rights in the Bailiwick,“ said Bailiwick Data Protection Commissioner Brent Homan.
“Safeguarding children’s privacy rights demands a community response, and we are inviting Guernsey’s young people, parents, educators, business and civic leaders to make their voices known in our ongoing public consultation for our Children’s Framework.”
The ODPA is advising parents to ensure their children aren’t using Snapchat if they’re under 13.
The Authority also suggests parents “have conversations with their children regarding the reputational and long-term risks associated with sharing personal information via such networks, including personal photos, that could then find an indelible presence online”.
