An inspection of St Mary and St Michael Catholic Primary School has found the children there are 'well behaved, courteous and respectful' and praised the positive environment the staff have created.

The inspectors visited the school in May this year, and in their conclusion, said St Mary and St Michael had a welcoming and nurturing ethos throughout its community.

Head teacher Mrs Shepherd and Deputy Head Teacher Mr Mercer have been praised for their strong and supportive leadership, and together with the staff team have created a positive and supportive environment, where their highly inclusive approach and the recognition and celebration of diversity and equality leads to everyone at the school feeling valued.

“The staff, School Committee and I are delighted with the outcome of our latest inspection which recognises our strong Catholic identity and quality of education," Mrs Shepherd said.

"This has been achieved through working collaboratively with our clergy: Fr Paul Dzwig, our parents and support agencies. Qualities of respectfulness, resilience, empathy and team work which are demonstrated by our pupils make our school a great place to learn and flourish.”

The inspectors identified a strong link between the teamwork of staff, their commitment to continuous professional learning and improvements across the school, as well as successful partnerships with parents, the School Committee, the Catholic Church, partners and other organisations which has had a positive impact on children’s learning.

Children benefit from regular engagement in stimulating activities in the local community, including activities at the beach, the local park and residential trips. The inspectors observed many examples of highly effective teaching, with tasks and activities which promoted and extended children’s thinking and offered the right level of challenge with scope to vary the range of teaching approaches used to deliver the curriculum.

Deputy Matt Fallaize, President of Education, Sport & Culture, said: “I would like to thank Mrs Shepherd and the staff at St Mary and St Michael Catholic School for their dedication and commitment to the school and its pupils. This inspection highlights the many successes they have worked hard to achieve and I am certain the school will build on this further to continue improving educational outcomes for children.”

In summarising their findings, the inspectors were satisfied with the overall quality of provision and confident that the school’s self-evaluation processes are leading to improvement. Their evaluations for St Mary and St Michael Catholic School were very good or good for all quality indicators, with Leadership and Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion both rated 'Very Good'.
