Children challenged to become 'Wild World Heroes'

Tuesday 06 July 2021

Young children are being challenged to embrace their imagination and develop their reading skills at the Guille-Allès Library this summer.

The challenge is to read six books during the summer holidays, collecting stickers and rewards along the way. This year’s theme of ‘Wild World Heroes’ is all about nature and the environment, and is being run by the Guille-Allès Library in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund.

Children are invited to join a team of heroes in ‘Wilderville’ as they get stuck into reading and discover all the things they can do to make their town better for the people and animals that live there.

The challenge starts on Saturday 10 July, however children can still join in after that date. Parents can register their children online HERE and collect their packs from the Children’s Library.

“We’re really looking forward to launching another Summer Reading Challenge," said Cornelia James, Children and Young People’s Services Manager.

"This year’s theme is truly awesome – or should that be roar-some? – and we hope it will inspire children to learn about the importance of the environment and how to help save the planet, as well as having lots of fun reading.”

As part of the Summer Reading Challenge the Library is also teaming up with the charity Every Child Our Future.

ECOF volunteers will be on hand at the Library and at other sites including the Kindred Centre and the Bright Beginnings Children’s Centre to provide a friendly face to meet and greet children, talk to them about the stories they’ve read over the holidays so far, and listen to them read.

“Supporting a child’s development is at the heart of what we do, so we are delighted to partner with the Library for the Summer Reading Challenge," said Andrew Bichard, ECOF’s Literacy Coordinator.

"We are very appreciative of our amazing volunteers, who are giving up their time to support this initiative.”

The challenge is free, and it runs until September, with finishers receiving a medal and a voucher for a free swim at Beau Sejour. It’s most suitable for children aged 3-11, but all are welcome to take part.

More information about the Summer Reading Challenge can be found HERE or by calling the Children’s Library on 743635.
