The States' interim Chief Executive will stay in the role until the end of 2022.
Mark de Garis, pictured top, was appointed in September last year shortly after the Policy & Resources Committee dismissed Paul Whitfield.
At the time, the Committee said that Mr de Garis would be the island's most senior civil servant for at least six months - a period which came to an end on 9 March.
The Committee now says that he will remain in the acting role for a further nine months "to ensure continuity of leadership and a smooth transition" to a new permanent Chief Executive.
"The Policy & Resources Committee is finalising its review of the role of Chief Executive and its recruitment arrangements for appointing a candidate to the role on a permanent basis," it said yesterday.
"The role will be advertised and the Committee hopes to be able to announce the successful candidate before the Autumn."
The Committee has consistently refused to answer questions about the circumstances and costs of Mr Whitfield's removal and of recruiting his successor to a post which previously attracted a salary of around £180,000 a year.
