Charity fundraising skinny dip returns

Monday 05 August 2024

The fourth annual charity skinny dip is taking place in Guernsey next month, raising money for three charities which directly help men and women living with cancer in the island.

The event - at Pembroke on Sunday 8 September - will raise funds for the Pink Ladies, MUG, and The Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief.

The organisers have said they are expecting "many brave souls" to "be shedding their clothes for charity" when the time comes around.

"We don’t ask for any registration," they said, "just turn up at 16:30 onwards with at least £25 in sponsorship. More is always better. So far in the last three years we have raised £10500 split equally between the different causes we have supported. So far we already have a thousand pounds pledged.

"There is a prize draw for people raising over £250. So take your forms around your work and get your colleagues digging deep!"

This year's charity skinny dip coincides with the end of the summer holidays, and the bi-annual Pride celebrations in Guernsey.

The organisers hope that this will mean there are lots of people on the island and some will join the regular attendees in raising money for the three charities.

"...throw off your inhibitions with your clothes," they said. "Have a fun swim and raise money for our good causes. There are lifeguards in the water from Guernsey Surf School and everyone will be there to help.  Get a group together and find out the benefits of swimming naked.

"Just think with the continued support we have had over the last three years how much we can raise for the three wonderful charities in Guernsey. What a wonderful way it would be for you to end your Pride Weekend with our dip."

The Guernsey event will be going ahead without any problems locally, compared to in Jersey where a similar event was disallowed because of an old law.

"As everyone knows the Jersey dip was unfortunately disallowed due to an archaic law from 1959. Many people may not know that the dip went ahead in secret.

"We were represented in Jersey as a gesture of support by one of the organisers. Only three people took part in the 'Mission Impossible' dip. But the good news is that £900 was raised for the Jersey Hospice.

"Ross the organiser from Jersey will be over and joining our dip. So come on Guernsey, let’s put on a good event so he can go and tell Jersey how great it was and how much money we raised."

Anyone wanting to take part can find more information and sponsorship forms on the Facebook page.
