Changes introduced for driving tests

Monday 10 September 2018

From today, learner drivers will have to prove they can follow directions given by a sat nav device before they're allowed to go it alone on our roads.

Previously announced changes to the practical driving test come into force today, meaning the 'independent drive' section of the test will be a thing of the past.

The test will now include a 20-minute section where the candidate will be asked to follow a pre-programmed, highlighted route on a sat-nav, which will be supplied by the examiner for the test.

The practical test duration will remain 40 minutes long, with a minimum of 30 minutes driving which is in line with the UK.

With the sat nav element now being a formal part of the test locally too, the Guernsey driving test will broadly mirror changes recently introduced in the UK which will "ensure the test remains current in terms of day-to-day driving."

The changes were announced by Guernsey's Traffic and Highway Services in January 2018 with a nine month notice period before they were introduced.
