Chance to grill President over funding plans

Wednesday 20 September 2023

Deputy Peter Ferbrache is offering himself up to public questioning and to discuss the unsustainability of the island’s public finances next month.

The community is invited to the session at Les Cotils on 5 October from 19:00 to 21:00.

The Policy & Resources President will also make a short presentation on the “potential solutions” for bridging a projected multi-million-pound shortfall in the public purse due to growing demand for services, such as healthcare and pensions.

Discussions will also focus on raising revenue for major capital projects like the affordable housing programme, infrastructure at the Bridge, the hospital modernisation project, and the transformation of secondary and post-16 education.

P&R will ask the States in October to agree to borrow up to £350m to fund the full list of public building projects and to introduce its twice defeated tax proposals, which includes GST, cuts to income tax and social security contributions, and one-off measures to assist lower income individuals.

The Committee says its plans are the only financially sustainable option.

The States debate in October deals with a number of complex issues, which are all unavoidably linked,” Deputy Ferbrache said. "We believe we have a plan that can achieve the best outcome for Guernsey, but many people have questions and views which I am keen to discuss."

If you are one of those people, please come join me.”

More information on P&R’s plans and the upcoming debate are available HERE.
