The case of the cover that goes “ga-dunk”

Tuesday 02 July 2024

Guernsey Water is on the case to rectify the noisy pump cover at La Piette after proclaiming the “ga-dunk” noise had been eliminated following the successful project to replace the decades old pumping station.

Runners and riders have been familiar with the sound for years whenever they pass over the metal plate just next to the station on the pavement.

After 92 days of work the stretch reopened to the public with teams moving out the way after replacing the pumping station for the utility company.

“Oh and, we’ve replaced the metal access panels so the cycle path is now much more pleasant, crucially you won’t have that ‘ga-dunk’ noise as you go over them,” Guernsey Water said in a sponsored post on Facebook.

But some have pointed out the noise persists when out for a run or cycling to work.

The States Trading Supervisory Board has now confirmed someone in the project team has been down to inspect the cover and action has been ordered, despite it being noted that the noise is less audible than before work commenced.

Guernsey Water is now looking to install a rubber gasket to soften the sound of metal hitting metal.

The multi-million-pound replacement project completed in late June, seeing the 34-year-old equipment thrown out and upgraded to serve the island for years to come.

Work took longer than expected after teams found the previous pipes had been unknowingly encased in concrete.

New pipework, access covers, a temperature-controlled chamber and a new control panel have been installed.

“The panel boxes and new tarmac aren’t the most Instagram friendly, but they are a super important and vital part of our critical infrastructure, ensuring we can safely return wastewater to sea for decades to come,” Guernsey Water said.

It’s a big thanks to contractors Geomarine Ltd for their hard work. This work forms part of a planned multi-million-pound investment during 2024 across various parts of our 500km of underground water pipes, 300km of drainpipes and reservoirs.

“Thanks to everyone for their patience as we carried out these works, we know traffic was impacted on occasion, but we worked hard to minimise the impact. Keep an eye on our social media channels for updates to other projects we are shortly beginning.”
