Carry on Scouting...

Thursday 11 February 2021

Guernsey Scouts have been challenged to take part in the Island Virtual Camp this half term, with many camping in their homes and gardens ahead of a virtual campfire tomorrow night.

Despite not being able to meet face to face during lockdown, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers have been given activities to complete from the safety of their own home.

They all follow pandemic guidelines, and include setting up a tent or a shelter to sleep in overnight (indoors or outdoors), cooking supper for their families, having a campfire which they can toast s’mores over and, after a good night’s sleep, making breakfast the following morning.

There will also be a virtual Zoom campfire held on Friday for all sections to take part in.

One brave young Scout participating is Jessica, 7, from the 1st Guernsey (Victoria) Beavers, who camped out overnight on Monday. She was accompanied by her equally brave mum, Sarah who said: “It was surprisingly cosy! Quite funny that I’m now a cold weather camping veteran because I don’t usually handle the cold very well at all.”

In some words of advice for fellow campers, they suggested keeping your sleeping bag inside - to keep it warm - until just before you go to bed in the tent, sleeping on a mat to prevent heat loss into the ground, wearing socks, and doing exercises before sleep to warm yourself up.

Guernsey Scouts and any section leaders who are taking part will be presented with a bespoke 'Virtual Camp' badge upon completion of the activity, which has been designed especially for the event.
