Broken handrails removed

Saturday 10 August 2024

Quick action was taken to remove broken handrails from the Bathing Pools once States staff were alerted to the dangers they posed.

Earlier this week, we shared the story of a young boy who found himself stuck after using one of the railings to climb out of the children's pool at La Vallette.

Cavani Butcher's accident had happened the week before, and one railing was removed after the incident, with another railing removed from the same pool this week.

Cavani's mum told Express that his knee got stuck between the railing and the wall, but she was also concerned that there were loose screws and damaged bits of metal sticking out from the misshapen railing.

"There's two railings just off the steps, and maybe they're not there to help people get in and out of the water but I remember using them as a kid to get in and out of the water and it never caused any harm, but I think what's happened is where they've been used over the years they've bent in a little bit and they basically need to be removed," said Kyra-Lea Butcher.

"One of them is hanging off and anyone could cut themselves on it," she added.

Jim Robinson from the States' Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services team said staff removed the damaged railings as soon as they were made aware of the dangers.

“Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services has responsibility for managing the bathing pools," he explained.

"We received a report about a broken handrail on Friday 2 August and removed it the same day.

“On Monday 5 August, we saw a Facebook post about a child getting their leg stuck in a different handrail and this was removed as soon as possible the next day.

“We are responsible for managing large areas of the island and so are grateful for those who get in contact with us by emailing ACLMS@gov.gg or calling 01481 227000 to raise any matters of concern so that we can deal with them as soon as possible.”
