Policy & Resources Committee sacked by the States

Wednesday 13 December 2023

Deputies will spend this afternoon electing a new President of the Policy & Resources Committee after its three remaining members were ejected at lunchtime.

It spells the end of office for Deputy Peter Ferbrache who has held the island’s top political job since the start of the term in 2020.

External relations lead Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq and Deputy Bob Murray have also been removed from office after States members backed a motion of no confidence in the committee by 23 votes to 16.

The vote was considered to have been on a knife edge when it was adjourned in the middle of debate last month.

There was one abstention - Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller.

Vice-President Deputy Mark Helyar, and Deputy David Mahoney resigned from P&R prior to the motion of no confidence debate starting in November.

Every position will need to be replaced, as a motion of no confidence succeeding means all members are deemed to have resigned.

Deputies have now gone for lunch but will resume at 14:30 and agreed to immediately to elect a new President of P&R.

Candidates will need to deliver a speech to the Assembly and then be quizzed by colleagues on what their intentions are in office.

Elections are then held via a secret ballot.

It’s understood Deputies Lyndon Trott, Peter Roffey, Rob Prow, and Charles Parkinson, who brought the confidence motion to the States, are considering running for the job.

It’s not clear when the remaining members of P&R will be elected, as time may be given for the new President to hold conversations this evening.
