The biggest school quiz in the Channel Islands will be testing bright young minds on their worldliness and coding skills when it returns next month.
‘Your World’ is the theme of this year’s De Putron Challenge, which will test Guernsey and Jersey students on their knowledge across the board including current affairs and science.
Other rounds will also assess the teams’ coding skills and ability to complete word and maths puzzles.
With a focus on the positive and negative impacts one can have on the world, this year’s inter-island challenge aims to raise awareness of the change that young people can make.

Guernsey Express editor Laura Clayton will be the quizmaster of the school quiz in both islands. The quiz will comprise rounds on current affairs, arts, literature, geography, science and technology.
There will be three separate heats for year 6 groups, year 8s and post-16 teams.
Using the software ‘Trinket,’ teams will be asked to work together to replicate a complex shape to demonstrate their coding skills – they will be judged on artistic style, colour, similarity to the provided shape and optimisation of the code.
There will also be a round on the ‘your world’ theme and team rounds where students will answer questions about a video and complete word and maths puzzles.

After the Guernsey and Jersey rounds, the best teams from each island will compete against each other in the competition’s final stand-off.
Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the De Putron Challenge, said: “The De Putron Challenge is hugely popular and it continues to get bigger and better every year. We welcome schools to bring along as many supporters as they would like. The atmosphere is fantastic with supporters cheering on their teams and seeing the excitement on their faces is delightful."
Organisers say that they encourage everyone to take part. Schools often hold their own internal quizzes to determine who will represent their year and then most schools bring along their whole class, friends and family members on the day to support.

Mrs de Putron added: “We want to help develop young minds and celebrate intelligence which is why we make changes every year to make it better, more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone. Each year we are so impressed with the student’s knowledge and we hope this year to inspire them to use their bright minds to change the world for the better.”
Guernsey’s challenge will take place on 5 November at St. James’s Concert Hall – year 6 will compete 10:00 – 12:30, year 8’s 13:30 – 15:00 and then the post-16 teams from 16:30 – 18:00.
Their Jersey counterparts will go head-to-head at the Royal Jersey Showground on 13 November. Year 6’s from 09:30 – 13:00, year 8’s 14:00 – 16:30 and then the post-16 event from 17:30 until 19:00.
The inter-island final on 21 November will be live-streamed on the day.
