Guernsey chocolatier wins Gold

Tuesday 26 November 2019

Chocolatier, Ben Le Prevost has been recognised at a global level at the International Chocolate Awards.

After making it through the regional UK round, his mandarin and star anise chocolate was picked to go through to the world level, where it won a Gold award.

Around 5,000 chocolatiers took part in the competition, which Ben and his team enter each year.

"I couldn't believe it," he said. "We've won Bronze and Silver before but we've never won Gold.

"We've tried really hard in the past to win Gold and we've thought we had chocolates that were worthy of the Gold. To get a Silver is really good, but Gold is exceptionally hard.

"It was judged on appearance, chocolate that you've used and flavour."

The chosen chocolate had to fit in a particular category which, this year, was milk chocolate caramel.

"We make chocolates all the time, but occasionally we'll get one that we think is a bit special and deserves to go into the competition," Ben added. "Mandarin and star anise was a stand out chocolate."

Ben's chocolate shop opened in Mill Street around seven years ago and has been trading successfully since.

"I was a pastry chef for 15 years," he explained. "I did specialist courses in chocolate making and I enjoyed doing chocolate, so eventually I decided to leave and do my own thing."

The "delighted" local chocolatier plans to continue entering the competition each year.
