Arts in Guernsey: What's On

Friday 05 April 2024

The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, but have you decided how you’re going to spend your extra hour of sunshine?

Guernsey Arts are proud to present another week of creativity for all to enjoy; from weekend-long festivals to entrancing exhibitions, whatever your taste - we’ve got you covered.

Handpicked from the Guernsey Arts Cultural Calendar, here’s what’s on the agenda this week!

Herstory Fest

Next weekend, the team at Guernsey Museums will open their doors to the long-awaited HerStory Fest!

The event, taking place within Candie Museum, will span 2 days from Saturday the 13th of April until Sunday the 14th, with additional related events taking place on Friday the 12th.

You’ll get the chance to discover the lives of nurses in WWI with The Guernsey Military History Company, enjoy drop-in art sessions with local artist Olympia McEwan, watch live performances about prominent local women by the Guernsey History in Action Company, and stop to watch movies featuring local women in the Frossard Theatre.

As if that wasn’t enough, there will even be tailor-made trails and activities available throughout the museum for the whole family to enjoy, among many more activities soon to be released! Can’t make the weekend? Worry not. On Friday, the Guernsey Arts team will be hosting a guided art tour with a focus on contemporary female art.

Come and join us! Entry to the museum is £7, or free with a discovery pass. For more information on both events, please visit the Guernsey Arts website.

Royal Ballet Presents: MacMillan Celebrated

Are you a lover of all things performance art? If so, you’re going to want to save the 9th of April in your calendar.

Next Tuesday from 7:15pm, The Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts will play host to a live broadcast of a series of MacMillan’s work; from Danses Concertantes to Requiem. Performed by The Royal Ballet, the awe-inspiring show will take you on a journey through MacMillan’s career.

Danses Concertantes, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan’s first major work; an early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow. It is followed by Different Drummer, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck.

The mixed programme concludes with Requiem, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its late artistic director.
