Anne Frank to get stage treatment in Guernsey

An autumn production of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ is coming to Beau Sejour next month.

GADOC is bringing the true story of thirteen-year-old Anne Frank to the island, detailing her families attempts to escape Jewish persecution at the height of the Second World War based on her infamous diaries from the period.

The Frank family are joined by the Van Daan family and a local dentist, and for two years these eight different people live side-by-side in uncomfortably close quarters in a secret Amsterdam annex.

In Wendy Kesselman’s adaptation of the original 1955 stage play, survivor accounts and newly discovered writings from the diary are interwoven to create a contemporary tale.

Director Dani Robin said the show provides an important reminder of a harrowing chapter in history.

“It is so important that we don’t forget these experiences - the tragedies and atrocities of the Holocaust, but also the courage and heroism of its victims and those who risked everything to help them.

“Anne used writing as an escape - escape from the mundanity of confinement and the uncertainty of her future, but also as a way of processing all the complex emotions of adolescence.

"Going into hiding, she was completely isolated from her friends and so her diary became her confidante and a source of comfort in diabolical times. And she didn’t hold back in speaking her mind on all matters.”

Ms Robin said despite the dark themes throughout, there are moments of light. The show is recommended for children of an older age, however.

The show runs from 18 October to 21 October starting at 19:30 at Beau Sejour. There is a 14:00 matinee showing on the Saturday. Each show lasts around two-and-a-half hours.

Thproduction is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
