Alderney set to appoint new government CEO

Wednesday 08 November 2023

The States of Alderney are poised to get a new Chief Executive 11 months after the previous role holder resigned.

The island is set to appoint a third person to the job in as many years.

The appointment of Theo Leijser, formally known as the Chief Clerk, will be considered as the only item of business for the island’s politicians at a States meeting on 15 November.

Kathryn Jones had taken up the role permanently in March 2021 but served for less than two years, with her resignation accepted by the States just days into 2023.

She replaced Andrew Muter as the CEO after he suddenly left the island following the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic.

The appointment requires the approval of the Bailiwick’s Lieutenant-Governor, and His Excellency Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE will attend the meeting.

It was formally accepted by Government House on 30 October.

Nigel Vooght, Chair of Alderney’s Policy & Finance Committee, said in a letter that Elizabeth Maurice, the island’s treasurer, had temporarily filled in while a replacement was sought.

“Following her appointment into the temporary role, discussion took place in liaison with the States of Guernsey regarding the future requirements of the Chief Executive role and subsequently an advertisement for a Chief Clerk was issued on 21 July 2023 with a closing date for applications of 3 September,” he said.

“Once the application period concluded, a shortlisting exercise was undertaken by a subgroup of the Policy & Finance Committee in association with an independent recruitment consultant. A meeting of Policy & Finance Committee, in its capacity as the States Employment Board, was convened on 3 October 2023, where the subgroup proposed to the Committee its preferred candidate.”

The motion to appoint Mr Leijser has been proposed by Mr Vooght and seconded by Kevin Gentle.

Alex Snowdon, States of Alderney member and an Alderney Representative in Guernsey’s States, welcomed the news on X.
