A second candidate has been nominated for the Alderney presidential election, with a long-serving local politician deciding to take on the current office-holder.
States' Member Louis Jean, who was first elected to the island's government in 1988, will stand against incumbent William Tate. He currently sits on both the Policy & Finance Committee, and the Surface Transport Advisory Group.
After a political career that began as Alderney’s first Land Use Plan Inspector in 1999, Mr Tate was elected President in June 2019, following the resignation of Stuart Trought.
He was elected unopposed, but there were originally two names on the ballot. Just hours before polling opened, Jack Gates withdrew his name from the ballot, saying he faced ‘abuse’ in the run-up to the election.
The President is responsible for a number of tasks, including the production and issue of the Billet D’Etat, Deliberations and Hansard Reports for the States of Alderney, as well as organising certain civic and social events.
The election is scheduled for 14 November, and polling will take place in the Members Room of the Island Hall between 09:30 and 18:30.
