Alderney launches 5 bays in 5 days

Wednesday 03 August 2022

Swimmers in Alderney are half-way through their 5 bays in 5 days challenge, a new charitable initiative based on the successful 30 bays in 30 days event in Guernsey.

It is being used to raise money for Alderney Cancer Relief and the Alderney Wildlife Trust.

“I set up the original 30baysin30days fundraiser for Les Bourgs Hospice in 2014 as they had provided care to my Mum when I was 19,” said organiser, Liz Stonebridge.

“It has been amazing to see the event grow over the years with over 900 people signing up in 2021.

“We have loved hearing how it has helped people rediscover their love of sea swimming and made them explore parts of the island they wouldn’t otherwise go to.

“Due to its success, I shared the concept with Jersey Hospice care who run their event with the National Trust of Jersey. Although bays in Herm and Alderney are optional substitutes within the Guernsey event, I had wanted to establish an Alderney version for some time and for personal reasons it was important to me that Alderney Cancer Relief would primarily benefit from the funds raised.”

The event began on Monday and is being supported by the Alderney Wildlife Trust.

Joanna Parmentier is Alderney’s Event Co-ordinator, she said: “The organisers would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the Potting Shed who have very kindly provided all artwork in the way of signs, maps, posters and registration forms for free and throughout have been extremely supportive of this event.”
