There have been multiple sightings of Australian flatworms in Alderney this year, which eat native earthworms and destroy soil quality.
The invasive species have so far been limited to one area but the States of Alderney want residents to be on the lookout for more in case they’ve spread.
The work is being carried out with Alderney Wildlife Trust and guidance has been issued to help people trap and dispose of the worms if any are found.
They like dark and damp places so they can be teased out with black plastic or wood, and they have an orange body with a pink head.
Worms should be placed into a container filled with salt, alcohol, vinegar or fresh water to destroy them.
Information on where they've been discovered can be uploaded HERE or told to States works on 07781 101954.
The worms are believed to have been imported in soil or bedding material, and islanders are also asked to check new plants before planting out.
