Airport roof being secured

Wednesday 01 November 2023

Work is ongoing today to ensure the roof at Guernsey Airport is as secure as it can be before Storm Ciaran hits the islands.

There are some known issues with the terminal's roof cladding system.

Last year, Guernsey Ports initiated work to try and fix the problems saying that "due to its age and the increasing frequency of bad weather events, the integrity of the system now needs to be fully examined".

There has always been a programme of monitoring and maintenance but with F10 winds forecast overnight and into tomorrow, a States spokesperson said: "Extra steps are being taken to try and secure the roof. Channel Welders and Access Scaffolding are on site now (13:00)."

The current airport was built in the early 00's with the terminal opening in 2004.

Both Guernsey and Alderney Airports will be closed all day tomorrow due to the forecast storm, with both also expected to open later than usual on Friday so that safety checks can be carried out.

Flights are operating today but some may be subject to weather disruption, particularly later this afternoon with anyone booked to travel asked to check with their airline before leaving home.

The forecourt outside Guernsey Airport terminal will be closed to vehicles from 18:00 today, until the airport reopens on Friday morning.

Guernsey Ports Chief Operating Officer Ross Coppolo said further updates would be provided when available.

“We are having to respond to the anticipated extreme weather and some impact on travel was inevitable. We are continuing to work with our air and sea carriers and other stakeholders to keep the disruption to a minimum, but at the same time ensuring the safety of our staff and that of the pubic, which is our priority.”
