Air Display date clash with start of term

Wednesday 07 September 2022

Guernsey's Air Display clashes with the first day back at school for most Bailiwick pupils this term, after teachers were given an additional inset day to catch up on training post-covid.

The Guernsey Air Display is traditionally scheduled to take place on the second Thursday of September, and has been for as long as the current organisers can remember.

It is part of the commemorative Battle of Britain Week which is used as a fundraiser for the Guernsey branch of the RAF Association.

In 2020 over £10,000 was raised in the week.

Traditionally, thousands of people line the east coast of Guernsey, including the seafront between St Sampson's and St Peter Port and vantage points at La Valette, Castle Cornet, St Martin's Point and others.

The 2022 Air Display will start at 10:45, over St Peter Port Harbour.

It is due to feature the Navy Wings' Wasps and Seafire, Rich Goodwin's Muscle Biplane, Team Raven, the Bronco OC-10B, an RAF Chinook and The Blades.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will feature the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane, with the RAF Red Arrows due to close the display.

A spokesman for the Education, Sport and Culture Department said the clash between schools returning and the 2022 Air Display came about when teachers were granted additional inset days at the beginning of this term.

The inset days were allocated to enable training and professional development work which was missed during the school closures amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The spokesman said that all schools are able to make their own arrangements for events such as the Air Display.

It is expected that head teachers will communicate with parents about arrangements for taking pupils out of school to watch the show.
