The Older Adult Community Mental Health team have attained Royal College of Psychiatry national accreditation in recognition of the standard of care they provide to patients suffering with memory problems.
The specialist team, which is based at Oberlands, incorporates the Memory Clinic service which was the main focus of the Memory Services National Accreditation Programme.
The award recognises how the team has met national standards of care over the last two years and a dedication to person-centred support for patients and their families.
It is assessed over a three-year period.
The principles of MSNAP accreditation are to ensure people with memory problems or dementia have fair access to assessment, care and treatment, irrespective of age, gender, background or co-existing disabilities.
The main standards are based around giving a good quality, timely diagnosis of dementia coupled with post-diagnostic care and developing links with third sector groups.
As part of the work, the Older Adult Mental Health team have developed a Cognitive Stimulation Group which provides social and reminiscence-based interventions to maintain cognitive function.
An education group for family caregivers has also been launched to provide tailored support for carers to support their loved ones with dementia.
Mark Haines, Operations Manager, Community Mental Health Services, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the team who are so passionate and committed
to delivering the best available evidence-based care to patients who are undergoing memory difficulties within Guernsey. They have worked so hard to achieve this prestigious status.”
Kay Fussey, Team Manager, added: “This accreditation with the Royal College of Psychiatry has been instrumental in enabling us to deliver the best available standards of care that we can provide to our patients who are referred into the memory assessment service. The team are very proud to achieve this accreditation. This reflects on all the hard work, dedication and commitment that is shown daily.”
