Investigations are underway to ensure there’s enough car parking spaces for sixth form students when studies temporarily move to La Mare de Carteret High School.
Parliamentary questions in the States from Deputy Aidan Matthews asked if there was any truth that sixth formers won’t be allowed to park at the site, and if “this has the potential to be a serious problem for beach goers if Sixth Form students use the popular nearby beach car parks during the day?”
Education President, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen said there would be “some capacity for student parking” but all options were being explored as staff parking was being prioritised.
She said “active travel options” would be looked at, such as public transport and cycling, to minimise overspill into the neighbouring streets and beach car parks.
Deputy Dudley-Owen said a traffic impact assessment is underway for use of the site, and loss of any recreational space to make way for car parking will be addressed within that document.
La Mare will be used as a temporary home for States sixth form studies from September 2025, when all secondary students have moved into Les Varendes.
The sixth form is likely to remain there for at least four years while the Les Ozouets campus is constructed, although funding has yet to be agreed for anything other than the foundations of the new sixth form centre.
