£6k+ raised by family and friends

Tuesday 11 June 2024

A group of people aged between 7 and 90 took part in a hair cutting, waxing, and shaving fundraising event on Saturday - raising more than £6,000 between them for two local good causes.

The money raised - which had reached £6,183.61 by Sunday night - is to be split between The Pink Ladies and Conor Bayes rehabilitation fund.

The Pink Ladies support women facing breast cancer, while Connor Bayes was left paralysed after an accident and is facing ongoing rehabilitation work.

The event raising money for both causes was arranged by Becky Allez, who wanted to shave her head in exchange for donations in support of her friend Krista Doggett who was diagnosed with stage 3 triple positive breast cancer a year ago.

Krista suggested sharing the money raised with her cousin, Connor - who also volunteered to shave his head.

As well as Becky and Connor having their heads shaved, Connor's 90-year-old grandad got involved too - with Connor's dad making a £100 donation for the older man to have his head shaved.

Krista and Becky's husbands both had their chests waxed.

Their two young daughters - Brooke Marie Doggett; aged 8, and Emilia Allez; aged 7, both had their ponytails cut off too, with their hair being donated to make wigs for children facing life changing illnesses.

Everyone taking part had their hair cut, waxed or shaved in front of an audience at Rovers' football club on Saturday evening.

There was also a raffle and hot dogs for sale, with money coming in from donations and corporate sponsorship too.

The event exceeded the fundraising total set with a final amount still to be declared.

Prior to the event, Krista told Express that she has received a lot of support from The Pink Ladies, as well as her family and friends. In particular, Becky has been a big support she said.

As well as her friends, Krista said The Pink Ladies have been a huge help to her and her family too.

After the event, Krista struggled to find the words to thank them all.

"What can I say? I truly am speechless as to the support we had Saturday and how generous people were, for us to be able to raise the amount we have. We couldn’t have done it and it be such a success without everyone’s generosity and all the kind donations from businesses of raffle prizes.

"My parents have helped more than words can do justice. My mum works but still manages to help us with the girls, especially Harper, most days, so this last year has been full on for them too and of course Ads been amazing, doing everything when I haven’t been able to."

Becky said that she was amazed at how much money they have raised so far, which was thanks to the generosity of so many people.

"I thought £1000 would be an achievement so I'm amazed at the generosity of everyone," she said.

"The turn out was incredible, to have all our friends and family in one place coming together and something positive to come out of what has been an emotional roller coaster."
