24 people from Ukraine granted visas to remain in Guernsey

Tuesday 28 February 2023

The Ukrainian family and sponsorship schemes, set up by the Committee for Home Affairs to support people displaced by war, has seen 24 people relocated to Guernsey so far.

The Committee has noted the recent one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by thanking Humanitarian Aid Guernsey and others in the third sector who’ve helped facilitate the schemes.

There are currently 24 people from Ukraine who’ve been granted visas to enter and stay in Guernsey. Four more will be arriving shortly via the sponsorship scheme.

The President of Home Affairs, Deputy Rob Prow, said: “The Committee has been pleased to have been able, with the support of other committees, to put in place both the family and sponsorship schemes.

“They would not have been as successful without the involvement of Humanitarian Aid Guernsey and other 3rd sector colleagues.”

The available schemes are linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine and have therefore not been assigned an expiry date.

Deputy Prow continued: “Beneficiaries arriving in the island are supported in a number of ways, including accessing core services available to islanders as needed, such as income support, education and health.

“We have also arranged for beneficiaries to have English and maths lessons through The Guernsey Institute if needed and they also receive advice on the third sector support that is available.”
